The 2026 Golf Season: Tiger Woods, Four Majors and Vietnam's First Fairways

In the small hours of 14 April 2026, in a wooden clubhouse beside the 9th hole at the Thu Duc golf course, around twenty people crowded in front of a 21-inch television. The satellite feed from Augusta National, Georgia, arrived grainy; the English commentary kept breaking up in the static. When Tiger Woods rolled in the final putt on the 18th and doubled over, the room went silent. Nobody clapped. An Australian man sitting to my left took off his glasses, wiped his eyes and said one short sentence: "Twenty-one years old."

Crying in the stands tells me the whole life of a player. That night the crying was not in Augusta. It was in Thu Duc, in a room where most of the people present had never completed a single competitive round.

Woods finished at 270, eighteen under par, breaking the 271 set by Jack Nicklaus in 2026 and matched by Raymond Floyd in 2026. His twelve-shot margin over runner-up Tom Kite was a Masters record. In other words, we were following a sport for which we had no baseline: no base scoring, no metrics, no history.

Four majors, four champions, one very politely dishonest season

Looking back at the whole of 2026 through data rather than through the glow of one April night, the picture is different.

The Masters, April: Tiger Woods, 270. The U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club, Maryland, June: Ernie Els, 276, one shot ahead of Colin Montgomerie after Montgomerie dropped a stroke at the 17th. The Open at Royal Troon, Scotland, July: Justin Leonard, 272, three ahead of Darren Clarke and Jesper Parnevik thanks to a closing 65. The PGA Championship at Winged Foot, New York, August: Davis Love III, 269, five ahead of Leonard.

Read those four lines side by side and a detail emerges that is rarely mentioned. Three of the four champions finished at eleven under par or better, which means the courses were being prepared to reward length and aggression. Only Congressional still carried the old severity.

And at the Ryder Cup at Valderrama, Spain, in September, Europe beat the United States 14.5 to 13.5. It was the first time the Ryder Cup was staged in continental Europe. A team event decided by half a point, the narrowest possible margin in this format.

The Tiger boom did not create golfers, it created contracts

What I observed in Vietnam over the following two years was a widespread misunderstanding. People read the Tiger Woods phenomenon as a market signal and concluded that the country needed more golf courses.

More courses for whom? The honest answer usually had nothing to do with the sport. Between 2026 and 2026, most golf projects in Vietnam were signed as part of real-estate and tourism investment packages, in which the course was an accessory to lift land values rather than the product itself. Every contract began with a back-lot story. Vietnamese players, the people who would need a course in order to play rather than to be photographed, were not in the calculation.
